The amount of ketamine to be effective ranges for each person depending on weight. But the actual amount is small, usually under 1.0/kg. A lot of power for a small amount of the drug. Not all cases are the same and we will not treat them as so. By learning about you and your needs will guide the course of treatment. Studies on Amounts of Ketamine
A study led by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) investigators identifies two subanesthetic amount levels of the drug ketamine that appear to provide significant symptom relief to patients with treatment-resistant depression.
In the October 2018 issue of Molecular Psychiatry, they describe the finding that single intravenous doses of 0.5 mg/kg and 1.0 mg/kg were more effective than a placebo in reducing mental health.
This study was conducted over 3 days and saw marked results in the higher dosages. While the .01/kg groups didn’t have much effect at all.
Typically, we start at around 0.5 mg/kg and then can scale upwards. This depends on the patient’s size and hopeful effect on specific illnesses.
Lower dose amounts generally show fewer psychedelic side effects but can remain effective on neurotransmitters. Providing some relief to mood disorders.
Higher does in the /.75 kg to1.0/kg seemed to work best on severe cases of Treatment-Resistant Depression with more success. However, increasing the doses may be needed depending upon the specificity of the patient’s needs.
Not to mention their ability to be open to the psychedelic effects that they may face. Which some may handle and embrace more so than others. It is part of the process and should be embraced and explored.
Amounts and Duration of Effects
The ketamine dose is conventionally administered across 40 minutes; however, safety and efficacy have been demonstrated in sessions ranging between 2 and 100 minutes in duration. You will expect to spend about an hour in our office and it is preferable if you have someone to drive you home. If not, waiting longer until the side effects wear off is necessary.
How Severe Does your Metal Ailment Need to Be?
Have you spoken to your general practitioner about all of the options available? Ketamine was initially studied for treatment-resistant depression. Cases in which other reasonable options were explored and exhausted.
That being said, with further research and usage. Ketamine is no longer the last option, it has established itself as simply, an option. Some drawbacks are possible addiction, not a ton of research on longevity of efficacy, or side effects. This will simply take time.
