The Neuroscience Center offers treatments for various forms of cognitive impairment, or conditions that act as a barrier to “thinking”. This includes MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment), deficits in global intellectual ability (previously called mental retardation), or other deficits in cognitive abilities (previously called learning disability). Cognitive Impairment may also describe drug-induced cognitive/memory impairment, such as that seen with alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, “steroids” (especially glucocorticoids), or an adverse effect of several other medications.
Cognitive deficits are also caused by environmental factors such as toxic effects of pesticides, nutritional deficiency, or mTBI/TBI. Deficits can also be a result of vascular diseases, and multiple degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Lewy Body Disease, static encephalopathy, and others.
