A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells. Most head injuries have no severe consequences, however, you must contact a doctor if you have received a blow to the head that is causing any of these behavioral or physical changes:
- Headaches
- Nausea or vomiting
- Fatigue or drowsiness
- Problems with speech
- Difficulty sleeping
- Sleeping more than usual
- Dizziness or loss of balance
- Sensory problems, such as blurred vision, ringing in the ears, a bad taste in the mouth or changes in the ability to smell
- Sensitivity to light or sound
- Memory or concentration problems
- Mood changes or mood swings
- Feeling depressed or anxious
Necessity Of Immediate Help
In order to illustrate the utmost importance of getting help ASAP after a concussion, I will tell a story about what Henry the Eighth and Howard Hughes had in common.
Both were excellent and energetic while young, however later in life they became severely disturbed individuals. Henry and Hughes both suffered frequent episodes of substantial head injury as young men. Henry the Eighth was powerful, strong and very passionate about jousting and showing of his supremacy. He had several head injuries sustained during jousting matches, which over time changed him into a cruel tyrant with cognitive impairment and impulsivity. Howard Hughes was a talented man and had many interests including a passion for flying. He was involved in four plane crashes and suffered several head injuries as a result. His behavior also became erratic and unpredictable later in life.
Steve Best, MD, uses specialized treatment to help people who have experienced severe or multiple head injuries. By combining perispinal etanercept injections and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, he can restore brain function for people with lingering side effects from trauma.
